HISTORY
PERSERVED
What a difference nine years can make! It was on October 5, 1994 that a small group of people gathered to talk about preserving the history of Longview Community Church. Those present were Dave Freece, Harlan & Shirley Gilliland, and Sandy Rountree, thus forming the initial History Committee. That night a purpose and goals were developed that have guided the committee in their endeavors. The Purpose of the History Committee was: "to preserve the historic records of Longview Community Church and to foster an appreciation for the church's history internally and in the community at large." The Goals that were established were: It was also determined that the History Committee needed to function as a sub-committee of the Christian Education Committee and report to the Board of Directors through them Since that humble beginning, the committee has added several other members that include: Betty Anderson, Ruby Anderson, Barbara Hewitt, Doris James, Helen Leonard, Mildred Miller, Karen Pickett, Lorra Piper, Verian Potter Runnells and Odetta Yeager. Under the leadership of Karen Pickett, the History Committee has been hard at work for the past several years. They have collected, organized and preserved pictures, records and artifacts related to the 80 years that this church has been in existence and have periodically put up displays to share this history with the congregation. Their first storage and work area was a small room just off the Counseling Center, but once they really started gathering all materials into one room they quickly outgrew the space. The committee was in the midst of trying to think of where they might find additional storage space when a miracle happened. They heard that the Resident Security Apartment was no longer going to be used as such and immediately a "vision" began evolving within the committee about establishing a Historical Museum utilizing this apartment. They made a proposal to the Properties Committee stating their rationale, need, and details on how it could be set up and asking their approval to use the apartment for that purpose. To make a long story short, they did approve the proposal and sent it on to the Board of Directors who also gave their approval. The rest
is history. There is now a Longview Community Church Museum and Gift Shop
with a work and storage area and a changing exhibit area. The Museum is
open every Sunday after both worship services, on Tuesdays from 9:30 to
Noon and any other time by appointment through the church office. Materials
located in the museum are Board minutes (1923-2000), Women's Fellowship
record books, scrapbooks, videos of special church services, audio tapes
of previous pastor's sermons, wedding licenses, memorial records, pictures
and much more. It is a great spot to learn more about the church’s
history and to check out the current exhibits. |
